President Barack Obama’s beer was on tap Tuesday in Halifax.

Or, at least the Good Robot’s version of it.

“Our Ale to the Chief beer is Obama’s own home brew from the White House. He’s the first guy to home brew in the White House since Jefferson, so it is a honey porter in tribute to African Heritage Month,” said Joshua Counsil, Co-owner of the Good Robot.

The north-end brewery wanted to put a Maritime twist on the White House brew.

“Obama’s staff were kind enough, with or without his knowledge, to post the recipe online in the home brew form and we just took that and tweaked it to add some Maritime flair. We’ve got Nova Scotia honey from out in the valley, we’ve got Maritime malt, so it’s a little more domestic than his version,” Counsil said.

The keg was tapped this afternoon but had already been receiving international attention before the first glass was poured.

“We only have forty liters of the stuff and we’re getting calls from people in New York asking where they can get it on tap. So it’s unlikely to last for very long,” Counsil said.

The brewery wanted to host an African Heritage month event that would welcome everyone from the community they now call home.

“They’ve welcomed us pretty warmly so we’d like to do likewise and make an effort to say, hey you are welcome to come out here and drink with us,”Counsil said.

The event welcomed Jamaican food from another north end business, Caribbean Bliss, a fitting combo for a beer that packed a smooth punch.

“The recipe is very much like Obama himself, it’s very cool, it’s casual, it’s approachable. Yet, it has these weird punctuation’s of boldness,”said Counsil.
