Eighteen blind and visually impaired students from Grade 1 to 12 gathered at the University of British Columbia Friday for the fourth annual B.C. Braille Challenge.

Students were tested on things like reading comprehension, proofreading, spelling and interpreting charts and graphs, with prizes available for the top performers in different age groups.

The challenge is held in both Canada and the United States. Sixty of the top scorers will be invited to compete in the finals this June in Los Angeles. But while that is a goal they would like to achieve – it isn’t the main reason they participate.

Most are the only visually impaired students in their schools, so the challenge offers them the opportunity to spend time with other visually impaired children.
