65 charged for the ransacking of Montreal City Hall

MONTREAL – 54 Montreal firefighters and 11 blue collar workers will be tried for allegedly ransacking Montreal City Hall in August 2014.

The accused are charged with mischief and unlawful assembly after the incident.

Daniel Rock, a lawyer representing the accused, said this is a case of mismanagement on behalf of the Crown.

“My clients are not detained,” he said.

Rock argues that the case was not properly put together and having 65 people on trial is simply unheard of.

“The Crown did not conceive of any details when they planned this trial. This is just too many to put on trial at once.”

His other issue with the case is the charges against the accused.

“This is not a ransacking like the Crown claims,” he said. “In a ransacking, property is damaged. In this case nothing was broken.”

The case will be held at the Gouin Judicial Centre, a high security building that was designed for the trials of the Hells Angels and will not be heard until April 2018.
