Defending provincial champ Reid Carruthers suffers loss in Viterra playoff qualifer

SELKIRK – The path to the playoffs at the 2016 Viterra Championship will be a little longer for defending champion Reid Carruthers.

The West St. Paul skip was knocked over to the b-side of the provincial men’s curling championship with a 9-7 loss to Scott Ramsay.

The Thistle curler made a triple kill with hammer in the final end to score four points. Carruthers, who is this year’s top seed, will now have to win this afternoon to qualify for the playoff round.

Also advancing through the a-side are Mike McEwan, William Lyburn and Daley Peters.

McEwan stole singles in the final two frames against Dennis Bohn to qualify with a 5-3 final.  Lyburn squeaked past Canadian junior champion Matt Dunstone 7-6 largely thanks to a quad in the fifth end. Peters stole a single in thes eventh and a deuce in the eights to beat Alex Forrest 6-3.

Bohn, Peters and Forrest all join Carruthers on the bonspiel’s b-side.

The playoff round begins Friday night. The final four will be firmed up Saturday ahead of the evening’s page payoff.  A Manitoba champion will be crowned Sunday afternoon.
