Police have identified a man found dead in Lake Simcoe after his ATV fell through the ice Thursday night.
York Regional Police responded to the scene around 10 p.m. after receiving a call about a missing person heading across the lake.
The marine unit was able to locate the man’s body just before midnight after spotting a hole in the ice.
“The vehicle was found at the bottom of the lake,” said Staff Sgt. Peter Heard. “We found the operator under the ice a short distance away.”
Police identified the man Friday as 66-year-old George Snache, of Georgina Island.
They say his death is not considered suspicious.
Police were able to locate his body after deploying an underwater device with a camera attached.
Authorities are warning the public to stay off the ice as the area is very inconsistent.
“The ice is not consistently thick. There are areas out there that are quite thick and other areas where it is quite thin,” said Heard.
“In fact, with our air boat on our way back we went through the ice in a couple of spots.”
Police say the warm winter has made ice conditions treacherous in many areas on the lake.
