The “Save Rigaud Mountain, QC” petition was uploaded Wednesday.

The author, David Hill, fears a Rigaud city plan to build more homes will erode the vast green space of 4,300 hectares.

The daily email you need for 's top news stories.

“You look off 30 meters to one side and there’s a house. It’s progressed like that pretty consistently for the last 10 or 15 years,” Hill said.

He worries that allowing bulldozers to raze more trees in favour of new homes will hurt the environment, particularly the fight against climate change.

“The only mostly-intact forest left anywhere near the island of Montreal is Rigaud Mountain,” he said.

Hill plans to present his petition to the mayor at a future council meeting.

The mayor of Rigaud told Global News there are new development plans in the works for the town but Hans Gruenwald Jr. insists none of them threaten the mountain.
