The season for big construction projects may be months away – but the City of Vancouver is already warning the public to plan ahead for future road closures.

“We’re trying to give people lots of notice because there’s a number of big projects,” said Lon LaClaire, the City of Vancouver’s Acting Transportation Director.

“More notice is typically better, people appreciate that, we’ve learned that with a lot of big projects.”

In May, work will begin on a 5.5 kilometre stretch of Southwest Marine Drive, between Granville and Camosun. And in two months, repairs and pipe replacements from begin on Burrard Street, from Davie all the way to West 16th. That work won’t finish for a year and a half.

“The sewer work is big and complex and very deep, and the structural bridge work is very involved,” said LaClaire, who hopes a public awareness campaign will help reduce traffic levels on Burrard by up to 20 per cent.

“We’re going to be out there messaging people to take other routes or to plan for more time.”

It comes with construction in Metro Vancouver already at high numbers for this time of year, with cities like Surrey and Vancouver processing a near-record of building permits.

“Everybody’s really working,” said Diane Herback with the B.C. Flagging Association.

“Companies are running out of trucks already, and it’s the wintertime.”
