REGINA – The Regina Food Bank and Conexus Credit Union are launching a new program aimed at developing cooking and finance skills.
The credit union is contributing $150,000 over the next three years for the Personal Finance Management Workshops and Nutritional Leadership Cooking Programs at the Food Bank.
The cooking program will offer classes on how to make nutritious meals and stretch items found in a regular food bank hamper.
“There’s been a lot of conversation recently about the rising cost of food, the lower purchasing value of a dollar and some of the challenges in the economy. I think it’s more important than ever for people on a fixed income, ” said Regina Food Bank CEO Steve Compton.

The financial workshops are focused on budgeting, household finances, and understanding various financial institutions.
Both courses will be held as six to 10 week classes at the Food Bank, but the financial one is available online.
The Food Bank expects these programs will reach about 700 clients by May 2018.
“It’s not something that starts and stops in a few weeks. It’s something that will be a part of what we do every day, and what’s available to the people we serve every day as well,” said Compton.
