WINNIPEG — There are laws in place for texting and driving, but a new app is trying a different approach; rewarding drivers for staying off their phone.

“We put people in vehicles, we felt a responsibility to provide them with a service that’s going to help them while they’re on the road,” Galit Solomon with the Dilawri Foundation said.

The user activates Texi before they start driving. Each minute they drive without using their smartphone, they earn a point. At the end of the month, they are entered into a draw that includes prizes like gift cards and travel vouchers. The more points the driver earns, the larger the potential prize they can win.

Winnipeg police said they are happy to hear about new ideas to get Manitobans off their smart phones on the road.

“When there are ideas, new ways of dealing with situations like this, it’s always a good thing,” Const. Jason Michalyshen said.
According to MPI over 5000 Manitobans are convicted every year of using a handheld electronic device while driving.

“From point A to point B we see at least one person handling their phone, looking down trying to hide it on their lap,” Michalyshen said. “It has to stop.”
