Smoke detector alerts sleeping people to Saskatoon house fire

SASKATOON – A working smoke alarm is being credited for alerting four sleeping people to a fire in their house. Crews from four Saskatoon fire halls were called out to 16 Mills Crescent in the Avalon neighbourhood just before 11 p.m. CT for reports of smoke in the house.

Firefighters arrived to find smoke coming from the house and four people outside.

An offensive attack was started and firefighters traced the fire to a bedroom on the second floor. The fire had extended to the exterior of the home, damaging siding and soffit.

It was brought under control in 29 minutes.

A thermal imaging was used to check for fire extension.

Damage is estimated at between $80,000 and $100,000. The cause of the blaze has been ruled as accidental.
