Four other people were transported to hospital with smoke inhalation injuries.
Investigators said the fire began on the building’s seventh floor, but have not discussed a specific cause. The fire marshal’s office is investigating.
Other residents were removed from the building and take to a nearby community centre.
NOTE: Previous versions of this story identified the building as a seniors home. Global News has confirmed Fairy Lake Gardens is solely an apartment complex reportedly with many senior citizen residents.
