NEWMARKET, Ont. – One person is dead after a fire at an apartment building in Newmarket.
York Regional Police said a woman in her 70s was found dead in an apartment as fire crews battled the blaze at Fairy Lake Gardens on Eagle Street.
Four other people were transported to hospital with smoke inhalation injuries.
Investigators said the fire began on the building’s seventh floor, but have not discussed a specific cause. The fire marshal’s office is investigating.
Other residents were removed from the building and take to a nearby community centre.
NOTE: Previous versions of this story identified the building as a seniors home. Global News has confirmed Fairy Lake Gardens is solely an apartment complex reportedly with many senior citizen residents.
