Victoria Police evacuated several buildings after a suspicious package was found near the legislature this evening.

The black bag was found near Menzies Street, adjacent to the west annex of the legislature, home to the premier’s office.

Part of the legislature were evacuated along with surrounding buildings, and Menzies Street was also been closed.

After two hours, Victoria Police confirmed the package was not dangerous, and nearby roads reopened shortly thereafter.

Security in and around the legislature has increased significantly in the years since John Nuttall and Amanda Korody were arrested for allegedly planning to place an explosive device next to the building.
