Police have arrested a 28-year-old man after a two and a half hour standoff south of Oliver early Wednesday morning.

A man entered a private property with what appeared to be a loaded rifle. When the homeowner asked him to leave, he did, but didn’t go very far.

RCMP found David McLaughlin inside a fifth wheel parked on the yard of a nearby residence. Police tried to coax him out to no avail.

“RCMP Members placed themselves at great risk to get close enough to the trailer to attempt to negotiate with McLaughlin asking he exit the trailer in a safe manner,” says Oliver RCMP Sgt. Blaine Gervais.

RCMP say after two and a half hours McLaughlin agreed to leave the trailer.

He was arrested for a firearms offence and breaching conditions for an unrelated matter.
