LETHBRIDGE – The University of Lethbridge is looking for community participation as it inches closer to its 50th anniversary celebrations.

Established in 1967, the institution says 2017 will be filled with activities. An audio project is planned to include stories from people who helped shape the university’s early years. A special song has been commissioned from folk musician and U of L alumnus, John Wort Hannam.

Annual events like convocation and Abbondanza will also have a 50th anniversary feel to them.

“The reason we decided to do something kind of full blown and this early out is because we really want the planning for our 50th to be a big community event,” said U of L president and vice-chancellor Dr. Mike Mahon. “We want alumni, we want members of the community to all feel that they can become engaged in the planning for our 50th.”

The school is asking the public for ideas in the celebration planning by submitting input directly to the university or by using the hashtag, #uleth50years.

The university welcomed more than 8,400 students at campuses in Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton in fall 2015.
