REGINA – Dozens of people braved the cold to hold a memorial march on Sunday afternoon for Nadine Machiskinic, who died on January 10, 2015.
Machiskinic fell down a laundry chute on the tenth floor of the Delta Regina Hotel in the early morning hours. She died of her injuries in hospital.
According to police there is no foul play detected in the death, but Machiskinic’s family are still searching for answers.
“The investigation has been going on for about a year now, We still haven’t received toxicology reports and autopsy reports,” said Delores Stevenson, Machiskinic’s aunt.
Stevenson added she is skeptical of the ruling that no foul play was involved. She acknowledged that Machiskinic lived a “high-risk lifestyle”.
Stevenson said she calls the investigators every month or two looking for an update.
“It’s like my granddaughter passed away just yesterday. That’s how I feel,” said Laura Apooch.
The group walked with candles and a blanket bearing a picture of Machiskinic, from Regina Police Service Headquarters to the Delta.
For Stevenson, question’s still remain in her niece’s death, but she hopes this march not just her, but others experiencing the same hurt.
“My hope is that this memorial and story will continue to bring awareness to these cases and these stories that are across Canada,” she said. “There are so many stories similar to this across Canada where families and communities still have a lot of unanswered questions.”
