MONTREAL –  As Yoda would say, fictional Star Wars character, R2-D2 may be, bring him to life Montrealer Frédéric St-Amour still did.

The Terrebonne native spent 21 months and about $3,000 to build his own fully functional version of the droid.

St-Amour and his R2 unit dropped by the Global Montreal Morning News to show off everything it can do, from saying “hello” to having a freak out.

The amateur builder found the plans online via a builder community and insisted it’s a project anyone can do.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Although it took him some time to figure out the circuitry and remote control, he said it was an extremely fun build and a “labour of love.”

Through the project, he learned all about robotics and said he’s looking forward to adding new features to his droid.

“When I started, I knew absolutely nothing about electronics or plastic or anything about R2,” St-Armour said.

St-Armour keeps up a Facebook page for R2, has already brought the droid to various Comic-Con events and even stopped by the Montreal Children’s Hospital to entertain patients.
