George Lucas says he sold ‘Star Wars’ to ‘white slavers’

Star Wars creator George Lucas has finally sounded off on the new film, The Force Awakens, and it’s not all smiles and sunshine. In fact, Lucas calls The Force Awakens “retro,” and says he sold his “kids” (how he refers to the movies in the franchise) to “the white slavers” (a.k.a. Disney).

Lucas had no creative input on the new film, and won’t be involved on the next two movies, episodes 8 and 9, which will be released over the next several years. Speaking to interviewer Charlie Rose, Lucas confirmed that Disney was not interested in his input on the direction of The Force Awakens.

“They wanted to do a retro movie. I don’t like that,” he said. “They weren’t that keen to have me involved anyway, but if I get in there, I’m just going to cause trouble, because they’re not going to do what I want them to do. And I don’t have the control to do that anymore, and all I would do is muck everything up. And so I said, ‘OK, I will go my way, and I’ll let them go their way.'”

The epic director defended his vision for Star Wars, claiming his original ideas and thoughts were the lifeblood that kept the franchise so successful.

“I worked very hard to make [the movies] completely different, with different planets, with different spaceships – you know, to make it new.”

The filmmaker, 71, sold the rights to the Star Wars films, along with the rest of his Lucasfilm production company, to Disney for US$4.05 billion in October 2012.

Lucas attended both the world and European premieres of The Force Awakens, and previously stated that Star Wars fans would like the J.J. Abrams-directed film, but he never clearly stated his own thoughts about the movie.

In terms of box office so far, The Force Awakens has cracked the top-five movies of all time with generated ticket sales at US$600.9 million, and it’s expected to go even higher, even beating the top grosser of all time, Avatar.
