Spirits high at Kelowna’s Candy Cane Lane despite reported theft

KELOWNA — If you’re not already in the holiday spirit, a visit to a certain neighbourhood in Kelowna is sure to change that.

More than 50 houses in Rutland are decked out for Christmas, banding together to bring cheer to those who go to see Candy Cane Lane on Gramiak and Collision Roads.

“It’s nice to see something like this in Kelowna,” says Carrie Spring, who was touring the neighbourhood on Monday evening. “People have gone all out and it’s a super fun place for kids and families.”

But apparently there’s a Grinch in town. Candy Cane Lane organizer Damjan Madjar says last week someone took off with some laser lights that were in a yard.

“A few laser light displays were stolen from a couple properties actually, one a few days prior and then another on Friday night,” says Madjar.

Luckily, the stolen lights were replaced through a donation from some Candy Cane Lane fans.

“Faith in humanity is restored, that’s what you feel, that’s the whole aspect of community,” says Madjar.

Lights weren’t the only things being donated.

“We also collect non-perishable food items that we re-donate once we have a full truck to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter and Freedom’s Door,” says Madjar.

And in true Candy Cane Lane fashion, spirits are still running high.

“They can come down and steal Christmas lights but they can’t steal our Christmas spirit, that’s something that doesn’t go away,” says Madjar.
