A recently published patent filing may provide a sneak peak at plans for Nintendo’s next generation gaming console. The patent, first filed by the gaming company in June, outlines a handheld device that combines joystick controls with a touchscreen display.

According to the patent description, the device would allow combine the experience of mobile gaming on a smartphone, with the classic feel of a gaming controller. The filing also notes that the device could even incorporate glasses-free 3D technology.

While a patent filing doesn’t necessarily meant Nintendo is planning on a product release, many have speculated that the controller could be linked to Nintendo’s upcoming platform, which is only known under the codename “NX.”

The company first teased the upcoming system during a press conference in March; however, it hasn’t released any details other than the fact that the new console will feature “fresh hardware” and gameplay concepts.

During the same press conference, the company announced it was teaming up with Japanese mobile game company DeNA Co. to develop games for mobile devices. In October, it released its first-ever mobile game dubbed Miitomo – an avatar-based game that allows users to communicate through customized “Mii” characters, set to be released in March 2016.

Nintendo has been forced to revaluate its approach to gaming as people increasingly turned to mobile phones to play games and spend time on social networks.
