HALIFAX — Saturday was the official opening of the Refugee Donation Drop-Off Centre in Halifax.
The centre is located at the former Rona store in Bayer’s Lake. It will be open for donations on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s for the next few months.
Many Haligonians came by to drop off everything from clothing to school supplies and even furniture.
The hope is that the donations make the adjustment a little easier for refugees coming to Nova Scotia.
Organizers say they’re amazed at how much support they’ve been getting.

“We were supposed to open at 11 this morning, our first person showed up last night at about 6 o’clock. Some of our EMO staff were here getting ready, she showed up, knocked on the door and she had five bags of brand new clothes from Mark’s Work Warehouse,” said Dominic Fewer, Emergency Management Planning Officer, EMO.
Nova Scotia Immigration Minister Lena Diab was on hand for the event and even helped to sort out donations.
“It’s important for all of us, this is all a team effort, I cannot stress that enough. It takes many people to put this together and the generosity of everybody is just overwhelming,“ she says.
Minister Diab wants people to know that the donations aren’t just for newcomers to the province. If Nova Scotians are in need, they are also welcome to get help from the site.
