EDMONTON – The RCMP has launched its impaired driving blitz and there’s good news coming out of St. Albert.
RCMP in that city conducted several checkstops last Friday and didn’t find a single driver impaired by alcohol and one under the influence of an illegal drug. However, one driver received a roadside suspension for being under the influence of an illegal drug.
Officers stopped and checked around 450 vehicles on St. Albert Trail and Ray Gibbon Drive.

A total of 112 local RCMP detachments throughout Alberta participated in Friday’s blitz.
December is Impaired Driving Enforcement Month and RCMP around the province are conducting roving patrols and checkstops as part of a national campaign.

The first Canada-wide impaired driving awareness and checkstop blitz happened two years ago. The checkstops have resulted in over 2,500 actions taken against impaired drivers.
An average of one in 33 drivers on Alberta roads is under the influence every night, according to the RCMP.
The highest number of casualty collisions involving alcohol happen on the weekends.
