SASKATOON – Firefighters had to use a rope rigging system to rescue a man Wednesday evening. The man became stranded under the Circle Drive South Bridge after he used a rope to rappel down from the pedestrian walkway to retrieve a cellphone he had dropped.

Responding crews located the man at the base of a bridge column over a large sandbar.

He told firefighters he was unable to climb back up as he was tired and cold.

Crews dropped an emergency blanket and hand warmers to the man as rescue personnel set up a block and tackle rigging system to pull him back up.

The man was put in a safety harness and brought back up to the walkway.

Saskatoon Fire Department officials say leaving the pedestrian walkway for any reason is not a good idea.
