EDMONTON – The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating a Canadian Pacific train derailment northeast of Edmonton.

Four cars derailed close to the Scotford Shell plant in Scotford Yard Tuesday afternoon while the train was travelling at a slow speed, CP said.

CP added there were no injuries or fires and no risk to public safety.

A Global News crew on the scene Wednesday morning said no spills could be seen, however a chemical odour could be detected.

Styrene spilled after one of the car’s valves were damaged. The spill was contained to the immediate area, and material in the other derailed cars was safely transferred to trucks and moved, CP said.

“Safety is the priority and CP takes this incident extremely seriously. CP is working cooperatively with Shell and municipal first responders on the clean-up,” Martin Cej, with CP pubic affairs and communications, said.
