TORONTO – Several ceremonies and tributes are planned around Toronto Sunday to mark the 26th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre and the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.
It was December 6, 1989 that a 25-year-old gunman stormed into Montreal’s École Polytechnique and shot 28 people, killing 14 women.

The murders helped spark tighter gun control laws in Canada and increased awareness of widespread violence against women.
A candlelight vigil is planned for 6 p.m. at the Philosopher’s Walk, adjacent to the ROM, where a permanent memorial commemorates the 14 victims.
The CN Tower and City Hall are to be illuminated in red Sunday night as part of the YWCA’s Rose Campaign, which aims to end violence against women and girls.
