“Stay off the ice”: Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service

WINNIPEG –Ice is slowly forming on the Red and Assiniboine rivers but it’s deceiving.

“It’s dangerous,” Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service education coordinator Marc Proulx said. “With these unseasonably warm temperatures it is going to stay like that for awhile.”

Proulx, who spent about five years with the water rescue team, says the water is frigid, and hypothermia could set in, in minutes.

Earlier this week the water rescue crew pulled a 26-year-old man from the Red River after he was spotted clinging to the ice by a passerby near the St. Boniface hospital.

Proulx said once you fall through the ice it’s extremely difficult to get or because the currents underneath are incredibly fast.

“Just stay off it,” Proulx said.
