KELOWNA – It’s official. The Kelowna Rotary clubs have pulled the plug on their Festival of Lights display.
For the past two years, the extravagant showing of tens of thousands of Christmas lights was set up at a downtown park.
But this year, Rotary’s application for an electrical permit was denied by the BC Safety Authority because the display doesn’t meet safety standards.
In a news release, Rotary says it spent thousands of dollars and person-hours attempting to upgrade the lights to meet safety code requirements.
“Over this next year the clubs will evaluate the costs and probability of completing upgrades required to ensure it’s safety before making a decision to continue with the display next year,” states the release.
Sponsorship money donated by businesses and other groups will be refunded.
