‘I don’t understand’: Family reeling from triple murder near Edson

EDMONTON – The family of Roxanne Berube is in shock after finding out a young man known to them is the sole suspect in the deaths of Roxanne, her boyfriend Dan Miller, and teenage daughter Jazmine Miller.

“They can’t understand why, what the motive was, and why,” said Roxanne’s cousin Chantell Sale.

The three bodies were found in a rural Alberta home near Edson on Sunday. Sale said the family found out Sunday night. She said many family members are in shock, some in denial. They can’t comprehend what happened.

“Everybody is in a loop because they didn’t expect this.”

Sale said Roxanne and Dan knew each other for several years and had been living together with their blended family.

“I was so happy for Roxanne to actually meet Dan. Dan was the nicest guy you could ever meet.

“She had five kids…For Dan to step up to the plate and be a parent and be supportive was, you know, what guy can step up to the plate and take care of these five kids? And Dan did.”

RCMP officers went to a rural location, about a half hour’s drive east of the crime scene, Tuesday with a warrant to arrest Mickell Clayton Bailey, 19, of Edson, Alta. for the first-degree murder in the deaths of Roxanne Berube and “an unidentified female” who Global News has identified as Berube’s teenage daughter Jazmine Miller, and second-degree murder in the death of Daniel Miller.

Bailey was officially charged earlier Tuesday.

“He was armed,” said Supt. Gary Steinke. “We responded to make a lawful, peaceful arrest and unfortunately that did not work out the way we wanted to.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) said officers had the home contained when the man came out of the house with a firearm. A confrontation occurred and Bailey was shot and taken to an Edmonton hospital with serious injuries. He had surgery and remained in “very serious condition” Wednesday.

Sale said Bailey was the nephew of Roxanne’s ex-husband.

She describes the 19-year-old as kind, quiet, a young man who spent a lot of time with his grandfather. Sale said she saw him just two months ago.

“It was always open arms, hugs… I always gave Mickell a hug.”

The RCMP continues to investigate the deaths and ASIRT is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
