REGINA – A group of Saskatchewan residents became official Canadians today at two citizenship ceremonies in Regina.

The newly-minted Canadians are part of a total of 4,819 Saskatchewan residents who have received citizenship since April.

“After witnessing today’s events, I am all the more convinced that Saskatchewan’s destiny remains in excellent hands as these new Canadians contribute to it in the months and years ahead,” said Michael Boda, Saskatchewan’s chief electoral officer.

Boda attended both ceremonies on Tuesday, where he congratulated each new citizen and gave a welcome speech that stressed the importance of voting – a foreign concept to many new Canadians.

“I also encourage everyone to take part by considering working in the election and helping administer the democratic process,” Boda said.
He encouraged all new citizens in the province to vote in Saskatchewan’s provincial election on April 4, 2016, saying the right to vote is a fundamental right of citizenship.
