TORONTO — Ontario Provincial Police have charged a former Barrie teacher in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a former student dating back more than a decade.
Investigators from the OPP Child Sexual Exploitation Unit received a complaint on Sept. 16 in regards to the sexual assault of a child that allegedly occurred from September 2004 to June 2005 while the accused was working as a teacher.
David Andrew Carswell, 61, of London, Ont. was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference and one count of sexual exploitation.

Carswell was convicted of possession of child pornography in 2009 after police seized hundreds of images from his home in Midhurst, Ont. in 2005, the same time the reported incidents of sexual assault allegedly occurred.
“The allegations stem back to the same time frame,” said Det.-Sgt. Paul Thomas, adding that the former student is still underage.
“They were a child and they still are a child, still under 18 now.”
Carswell attended a bail hearing Friday and details of his release were not yet provided.
Police said they have yet to determine if there are any other allegations against Carswell, but the investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the OPP or Crime Stoppers.
