Versteeg was facing breach of probation charges on Wednesday when he somehow managed to leave the courthouse in the afternoon while court was still in session.

“A mistake was made and we’re investigating how it happened and how to prevent it in the future,” said Const. Ken Steeves.

Police issued a public alert late Wednesday as Versteeg posed a risk to public safety based on his criminal record.
