First flight from Paris arrives at YVR since attacks

Airlines across the world operated a normal schedule of flights into and out of Paris this weekend, including an Air France plane that landed at Vancouver’s YVR airport Sunday afternoon.

That same plane flies back to France about an hour later. The airline launched direct service between Vancouver and Paris earlier this year, and said it would operate all upcoming flights to and from France. However, they say delays were expected because of increased security at airports, including Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport.

While flights are operating as normal, some in the tourism industry are concerned that travellers may shy away from visiting the French capital following Friday’s deadly attacks.

Terrorists with guns and suicide vests carried out co-ordinated attacks across Paris that left at least 129 people dead and more than 350 injured. The targets, including a cafe and a concert hall, were the types of places that attracted a young crowd and in-the-know travellers. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

A Paris-bound Air France jet was evacuated at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport after authorities received a threatening tweet. A terminal at London’s Gatwick Airport was shut down for hours after a man was seen throwing away what looked like a gun.

Paris airport authority Aeroports de Paris said all flights were operating normally Sunday, but that travellers should give themselves more time because of heightened security measures.

Security officials remind travellers to pack appropriately for their flight, ensuring liquids and gels and properly stored.

They also say travellers should notify the local Canadian embassy in the country they are visiting.
