Hall of Honour opens at Manitoba legislature

WINNIPEG — A Hall of Honour has opened at the Manitoba legislature in remembrance of the province’s military contributions in the First World War.

Premier Greg Selinger and Deanne Crothers, special envoy for military affairs, unveiled a complete list of all regiments that were based out of Manitoba.

The Hall of Honour also displays plaques and features the Books of Remembrance.

The books have until now been housed in a room on the second floor that was largely inaccessible to the public.

There is to be a daily ceremony at 11 a.m. for the ‘turning of the pages.’

The remembrance books honour casualties from the Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War and the Merchant Navy.

“It is important the public has access to this material to serve as reminder that we should never forget the courage and sacrifice that has been made on our behalf so that we might live in the greatest, freest nation in the world,” Selinger said Tuesday in a release.

The Hall of Honour will be open to the public daily between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.
