No Crosby vs McDavid: It’s happened before

EDMONTON – Hockey fans were really looking forward seeing Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid on the same sheet of ice Friday night.

That changed when McDavid broke his clavicle earlier this week.

But it’s not the first time fans were robbed of “star power” between the Oilers and Penguins.

In 1988, there was a similar circumstance with Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

It was Lemieux’s fourth year in the NHL and, for whatever reason, the two had not played against each other very often on what was then Northlands Coliseum ice.

Feb. 19, 1988 was a hot ticket and keep in mind not all games were televised back then, including this one.

Gretzky and Lemieux started the game, but both suffered injuries to their faces and neither finished it.
