Kelowna’s downtown waterfront is getting national recognition. Stuart Park was named Canada’s best public space today by the Canadian Institute of Planners.
Kelowna’s mayor, Colin Basran, says it’s a big deal.
“This is something that has been peer reviewed by planners and various other specialists”, says Basran. “I think this is really special particularly for our staff because it really validates the good work that they’ve done to make this a livable space.”

The competition looked at 29 different nominations for three different categories: Best street; best neighborhood; and best public space. The institute defines a great public space as a community hub, providing opportunities for various activities year round.
Mayor Basran says the park’s ability to come alive in all seasons is what made it stand out.
“It’s just becoming a space that’s used year round, becoming a hub of activity, and I think it will only become more busy as the downtown continues to become revitalized.”
Stuart Park is home to numerous events including New Years Eve celebrations, roller derby tournaments and free ice skating in the winter. It’s the first time the park has been nominated for the honor, beating out seven public space finalists from across Canada.
The Stuart Park rink is expected to open December 1st.
