Accused in Calgary Stampede stabbing now charged with manslaughter

CALGARY – Charges laid in a stabbing at the Calgary Stampede this summer have been upgraded following the death of one of the victims.

Officers were called to the midway just after midnight on July 9 after reports of a fight.

Paramedics rushed two men to hospital with stab wounds; one was treated at the Rockyview Hospital and then released, while 25-year-old Zakariya Mohamed Abdow was taken to the Foothills Medical Centre in critical condition.

Police said a third man found with stab wounds was taken to hospital after a foot chase.

On Thursday, police announced Abdow had since died from his injuries.

Calgarian Rinato Toy, 20, was originally charged with aggravated assault, but his charge was upgraded to manslaughter during a court appearance on Thursday. Police said Toy was the man taken to hospital follow the foot chase.

“The investigation has revealed the fight occurred between two groups of people who were familiar with each other,” said police in a news release.

To date, there have been 27 homicides in Calgary in 2015.
