Little houses coming to the prairies

WINNIPEG — It all started with Darrell Manuliak visiting a book at the library about tiny houses as a child. That childhood fascination is now a reality for him and his partner Anita Munn.

“I am super happy to help people,” Manuliak said. “This helps people get more affordable housing.”

The couple started Mini Homes of Manitoba. It’s a movement that is gaining popularity around the world. While the houses they build may be small, they say the benefits are big.

“It’s financial freedom” Munn said. “You’re able to own your home outright in such a short period of time, for a fraction of what a large home would cost you.”

The concept also advocates for reducing your ecological footprint. The custom mobile homes are equipped with composting toilets, LED lighting and a duo air conditioning and heating system.

“The amount of electricity the home uses is so low,” Munn said. “You’re going to see such a huge difference in a reduced amount on your hydro bill every month.”

The response from Manitobans has been overwhelming. The couple already has 3 customers interested in purchasing a tiny home, and many more inquiring. One of the customers is Alison Marquez; a single mom with two boys.

“I thought, If I could find a way to bring my living expenses down, that’s going to give us the freedom to do a lot of other things,” Marquez said. The mom admits there have been some critics, but she is confident her family will be comfortable.

“I think as long as we have a place to sleep, eat and be comfortable, I think that’s all we really need. I think we’ll be fine here.”

The open house of the first mini home is Saturday at 1557 Brookside Blvd, unit 13.
