The Prairies lead population growth in Canada

WINNIPEG – Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta had the highest average population growth of all provinces from 2011 to 2014 according to Statistics Canada.

A study called “Recent changes in demographic trends in Canada” recorded Canada’s overall population growth as 1.1 percent each year.

Ontario’s growth rates were below the the national average, which is a change from past years when they led.

The population also decreased in Newfoundland and Labrador as well as in New Brunswick which has more seniors.

The Prairies have a younger population compared to the rest of Canada, with more children up to 14 years old than adults 65 or older.

Based on these trends, Statistics Canada projects the Prairie provinces could surpass Quebec’s population in less than 50 years while the Atlantic provinces could decrease to less than five percent of the country’s population.
