Breakfast Buzz: Do you think Saskatoon needs HOV or carpool lanes?

How would carpool lanes fare in Saskatoon? The idea of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes was mention by Coun. Lorje at yesterday's city council meeting. Tarrah Harvey/Global News

SASKATOON – In order to prepare for a population growth in Saskatoon, city council has been discussing an array of ideas to make sure traffic continues flowing smoothly: new bridges, dedicated rapid transit lanes, and what roads become high volume. Most recently, Ward 2 Coun. Pat Lorje brought up the idea of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes on the University Bridge.

HOV, or carpool lanes, are popular in larger cities where a lane is dedicated to vehicles with more than one occupant, as well as transit and sometimes eco-friendly cars. The idea is that it encourages carpooling, and therefore relieves traffic congestion and reduces emissions.
