Electric cars will be allowed on Highway 97 HOV lanes in Kelowna

How would carpool lanes fare in Saskatoon? The idea of High Occupancy Vehicle lanes was mention by Coun. Lorje at yesterday's city council meeting. Tarrah Harvey/Global News

KELOWNA – A signage snafu has inadvertently revealed upcoming changes to traffic regulations on Highway 97 through Kelowna.

Signs have recently been posted showing drivers with electric-powered cars will be allowed to use the High Occupancy Lanes.

During peak traffic hours, they’re restricted to vehicles with at least two passengers as well as motorcyclists.

The allowance of electric cars is to be officially announced on November 2nd and the signs were supposed to be covered until then.

But that didn’t happen until Global News inquired to the transportation ministry Friday morning about the HOV changes.

So for the next 10 days, Harvey Avenue drivers with electric cars will have to stick to the other lanes when HOV lane restrictions are in effect.
