HALIFAX – Police evacuated the Downtown Mini Mall and closed off a couple of streets for several hours after a controlled substance was found in an envelope Monday afternoon in New Glasgow, N.S.
The New Glasgow Regional Police, the New Glasgow Fire Department, the Special Hazards Response Unit, and the RCMP Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear Explosives Response Team became involved after a report of a suspicious envelope at the mall at about 2:20 p.m ET.
Police said the substance is an illegal drug, which was sent out for testing.
There were no injuries, and few details are being released at the time of this report because the investigation is in its infancy.
Provost and Archimedes Streets were shut down, and apartments were also evacuated; the Canadian Red Cross set up a shelter at a fire hall during that time.
The mall was reopened at about 8:05 p.m.
