MONTREAL — Two families are homeless Monday morning after an overnight fire destroyed a triplex in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
Firefighters received a call at approximately 1 a.m. from one of the residents who noticed the smell of smoke inside the apartment and said the floor was unusually hot.
Once they arrived on scene, firefighters could see smoke coming from the roof of the triplex. They got inside and realized the fire had started in the basement ceiling and was travelling up through the walls.
It took approximately 70 firefighters to combat the blaze.
The two families were evacuated and will need to be relocated.
Firefighters have yet to determine the cause. For now, nothing suggests it was criminally set.
