UPDATE: Farnham standoff ends peacefully

FARNHAM – An armed man has surrendered quietly and Sûreté du Québec officers are investigating after a tense a 10-hour standoff in Farnham, Que.,65 km southeast of Montreal.

At 6:30 a.m. on Sunday police received a call about a man who had barricaded himself inside an apartment on St-Joseph Street.

The man was said to be possibly armed and in distress.

A woman and two children who live in the same unit, were able to escape unharmed.

Police have have since confirmed that the suspect had at least one weapon in his possession and that gunshots were heard during the day.

The man surrendered peacefully to police at 4:15 p.m. and was taken to hospital for observation. He suffered no visible injuries.

Residents in neighbouring buildings were given permission to re-enter their homes, after the evacuation order was lifted.
