New polling from the Angus Reid Institute has found that 76 per cent of Canadians believe “Canada did the right thing” by ending trade negotiations with the U.S. as trade talks between the two nations fell apart.
The findings also say that 59 per cent of Canadians believe the government has “not very much” or “no control at all” on whether an acceptable agreement would be reached, a belief “held at equal levels across the political spectrum.”
“Half (53 per cent) of those who voted Conservative in the 2025 federal election say it was “right” to walk away rather than accept a bad deal,” the poll states.
In addition, 69 per cent of Liberal voters and 76 per cent of NDP voters say Carney showed “strength by refusing to accept terms he believed were not in Canada’s interests.”
Canada is set to impose dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on the U.S. on Sept. 8, which are expected to focus on dairy, steel, pulp, appliances, paper and electronics and agricultural equipment, though the specifics are not yet clear.

As of Monday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened additional tariffs on Canadian automobiles, car parts and steel, to kick in on Jan. 1, 2027, saying that “Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years.”
He also added that “Canada will be treated like a State no longer!”
There is also strong support for Canada’s counter-tariff response, with 62 per cent of surveyed Canadians calling the counter-tariffs “about right under the circumstances.”

In addition, 64 per cent believe “the country will emerge from this challenging time stronger as Canada reduces its dependence on the United States.”
The U.S. tariffs cover hundreds of items and include products such as sports equipment, plant seeds and essential oils, among others. Trump imposed them citing what he calls “unfair” treatment by Canada of U.S. dairy, autos and alcohol.
The 50 per cent American tariffs will impact roughly $28 billion worth of Canadian goods, the Prime Minister’s Office stated Saturday.
Nine in 10 (89 per cent) Canadians also say they “worry that this will cause inflation.”
Thirty-eight per cent are also “very concerned the trade war escalation will impact the Canadian economy.”
When announcing Canada’s retaliatory measures to the U.S. tariffs, Carney stated on Aug. 22 that this choice was made “reluctantly” since “some of these measures will raise costs and reduce choice for Canadians.”
“At the same time, we take this step confident that it is in the best interests of Canada. And that by rejecting a bad deal, by standing up for Canada, by focusing on what we can control, we will build Canada strong for all.”
So Anonymous yet again sees all, knows all…..maybe read just a tiny bit more or does your own cult not allow it. Sad.
Im sorry global needs to knock off the propaganda, this is actually sad at this point.
No one I work with was polled on this, so how could 76% of people support walking away from a trade deal we know nothing about? This is honestly so scummy of you guys and you should ashamed for helping ruin our country.
How could 76% of Canadians approve walking away from this deal when they don’t even know what was in the deal? Carney/Liberal cult?
It is impossible to deal with a lying demented person like Moron tRumpf. Carney did the right thing but also felling Moron tRumpf’s trap.tRumph is trying to start a military war with Canada because we don’t want to unite wothe states just remain friends.
Everyone knows global loves to cherry-pick liberal-slanted polls and publish them at their news site. Usually IPSOS. Despite this, that 76% will drop daily as things get worse and more expensive with our counter-tariffs and god knows what else that might be coming now.
Maybe the Liberals should show Canadians what exactly was on the table that got thrown out. It’s not like it’s Top Secret military plans. C’mon Carney.
Sorry but these or any polls nowadays are just clic bait to try and turn people to the way the questions were asked in the poll and do nothing to help out every day Canadians. Keeps the politicians happy so they can tell us how great they are doing because a poll said so.
We really need to get rid of all polls and let people think for themselves instead of being influenced by this clic bait.
“Accept a bad deal”
Except that nobody in the public knows the details of the deal. The Carney liberals have not provided all the details, so Canadians cannot state it was a “bad deal.” What are you hiding, Carney? Release the full draft of the text and complete terms of the agreement. Recall parliament to discuss and debate this. Do the right thing for a change, Carney.
Thanks to the media brainwash. Where is carneys wealth stored. Where does his wife live and children go to school.. The good old USA. Elbows up
At last I hope Canadians will show a bit of backbone and stop the negative talk. Rather than wring their hands in despair get out and create new opportunities without hanging on the coattails of the US. Other countries do it and so should Canadians.
I love Canada but unfortunately we have lost the game. Our politicians and admin are no where near as smart as the US. They have the best brains in the world. Ouch, hard times ahead, brace yourselves, watch your finances, you’ll need every penny.
never believe anything from Lib back pollsters… even when they lie to our face about Conservatives agreeing or even being a part of this poll… this is all about the November Elections, as Obama and other high ranking Dems made a special visit to Carney weeks ago. This deal was never going to go thru. Dems will give the Libs a better deal. IMO
HAVEN’T HEARD A PEEP FROM MRS SMITH !!! WE KNOW HOW SHE FEELS
Good to know 76% of fellow canadians are idiots.
Clearly, US citizens are commenting here. They just can’t resist.
@ Rick, your comment comes from right wing crazyville, lmao.
we have no clue what was in the deal. Canadians believe it was the right thing to do base on; emotional reactions based on cryptic comments
What 76% of the country don’t realize is that this will hurt Canada a lot more than the US. Sure it’s a moral victory, but how many more Canadian businesses will be squeezed out under another two years of the Orange Man? Their midterms are looking more unlikely to shift the balance of power to saner minds due to the DSA insanity dividing the left and making deals with other countries is a losing strategy because the US legally interdicts the majority of all trade routes into North America, making it all the more expensive for Canada since the majority of imports has to pass through a US port first.
Sometimes, temporarily taking the lesser evil is the pragmatic way to go and Carney failed. The propaganda of him caving to Trump’s demands probably broke him. And don’t forget, now that we retaliated, having sympathetic US groups petition SCOTUS to overturn the tariffs (which they have done in the past) is no longer an option. A weakened Canada is more vulnerable to their predatory 51st state ambitions and it seems like we were goaded into shooting ourselves in the foot.
Clearly your poll was taken in leftwing Crazy Ville.
