U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened additional tariffs onto Canadian automobiles, car parts and steel to take effect next year as the trade war between the two nations escalates.
“On January First, 2027, Tariffs on all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel, will be increased to 50 per cent. Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS,” he posted to Truth Social Monday morning.

“Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years. Their ridiculously high tariffs on our Farmers and farm products has made life impossible for these great American Patriots, and has long created a 60 Billion Dollar Deficit between our two Countries. Not sustainable, and NOT ANYMORE!”
He also added that “Canada will be treated like a State no longer!”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated that Canada will match the 50 per cent tariffs that the U.S. put into effect over the weekend with a “dollar-for-dollar” retaliatory response as of Sept. 8.
“Our response will be concentrated in sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Also include products that are currently subject to unjustified section 232 and 338 tariffs,” Carney said in Ottawa on Aug. 22.
More to come.
How about we prolong the trade negotiations until Dec 1st, 2026 and hope Trump is no longer part of the Republican party.
All the TDS people
On here blaming Trump. Our PM and government failed us. Trump kicked carnies ass. The media will spin. Canadians will suffer greatly.
tRump is an ignorant, petulant child that can’t stand anyone out manoeuvering him. He tried to throw some things into the negotiations which said Canada would not be allowed to trade with other countries, unless he approved it. Who the hell does he think he is?? NO DEAL, YOU ORANGE BUFFOON.
Our car industry will be dead, not the Americans’. Ontario plants will be closing soon. They have 10x our economy. We are up sh* t creek.
Trump wants to destroy his car industry.
Clowny will sink the country and have China take over. All part of the master plan
No soup for you Tramp!
@ Anonymous “the next release”?
There hasn’t been an initial release of the full text, so how could there be a “next”? Once released to millions of people, any falsifications would be picked up by the countless trade staff involved in its development (on both side of the border) and then the government could be facing serious accusations of records fabrication. No, if the deal contains content that the government doesn’t want Canadians to see, they simply won’t send it out rather than risk sending out something false and getting easily caught.
And yes, the Americans denied that anything last minute was introduced by them. Why would you trying to say they aren’t denying it when that was one of the first headlines out there???
And where does the cupid stunt think the auto manufactures in the US are getting thier aluminum from!! Go ahead, increase the costs of manufacturing in the US. You’ll be head by 2027 anyways, so who cares
If Trump thought it was so important, why wait 5 months to impose tariffs? TACO.
The Gordie Howe Bridge deal turned out worse for Canada for the same reason that this tariff deal broke down. Trump changed both situations after things were settled.
@ Jen M. – How will you know that the next release is more authentic than the press conference? Without a deal there is no full text to be shown. The deal is negotiated in phases that may or may not be related. Steel first then perhaps lumber together with autos etc. The Canadians say that the US raised new, problematic issues at the 11th hour. The Americans are not denying it.
As he should.
@ Anonymous (three messages down).
Any pudent/intelligent citizen would like to first look at all the facts then decide for themsleves rather than just blindly accept the words from a politician from any party.
Do you honestly think our Canadian government (or any Canadian government) is incapable of some dishonesty to maintain or enhance their political position? I’m assuming you’re not a child and understand the very, very basics of politics and politicians.
@ Anonymous (two messages down).
I think you misunderstood me. Carney has offerred his own simplified explanation for what happened, but Canadians would like to see the full text of the deal for themsleves.
@Jen M
Well said and ditto for me too.
Carney has to show that it is Trump that is being unreasonable but given Carney’s record on the Gordie Howe bridge it is imperative that he releases the full documents of the deal in order to stop the second guessing of his decision and to get all Canadians onside in this fight with Trump. If Carney will not release the documents then the doubt will remain on his integrity and whether he did it for Canada or for himself.
@ Jen M. – The Prime Minister has already explained what the disqualifying points were. The government has been forthcoming.
@ Jen M. – You are choosing to doubt what you already have been told why would them telling you again make a difference?
The US asked to control who we trade with and set our tariff rates with them – like we are the 51st state. Why is this so hard to grasp? Or are you disingenuously trying to make it seem like the Canadian gov’t is not forthcoming?
As an ordinary Canadian, one of the things that is equal parts maddening and baffling to me is to be in a position where I trust Canada’s PM about as much as I trust DJT and company (which is to say, not at all). I hate feeling like this about the top official representing Canada and its interests to the world. Concealment breeds distrust, and Carney continues to keep Canadians in the dark.
I am actually genuinely hoping that if and when the LPC shares details with the public, I will breathe a sigh of relief that the US asks were indeed too much, and the offers were indeed too small; in short, that they made the right decision when the stakes were high. Unfortunately, the longer Carney hides details from the public, the more it looks like he gambled with Canadians’ prosperity for political gain; and if this is the case, Canadians need to know that their leader played fast and loose with their welfare, and act accordingly.
We can’t control what a foreign country decides to do, we could however fix our own house.
Canada doesn’t even have free trade between provinces. Before the recent LCBO ban, it was easier to buy to American alcohol in Ontario than it was Albertan.
Carney was elected on a promise to negotiate a deal with Trump, tear down interprovincial trade barriers, and “build faster than we have in generations”. Carney has failed to accomplish any of these promises, yet Canadians anger is solely focused on Trump, not the leader we actually have the power to replace.
Nice of Trump to put off the tariffs until 2027. By then he’ll have no authority to impose tariffs and could even be impeached (hopefully)!
“Accept a bad deal”
Except that nobody in the public knows the details of the deal. The Carney liberals have not provided all the details, so Canadians cannot state it was a “bad deal.” What are you hiding, Carney? Release the full draft of the text and complete terms of the agreement. Recall parliament to discuss and debate this. Do the right thing for a change, Carney.
@Ben Absolutely NOT scripted by the Conservatives but it IS from Canadian that is very concerned for our country and THAT is why the call for the release of the deal documents. If we are going to fight Trump we have to be sure that what we are being told is the truth and not just misinformation to get our anger to overtake our logical thinking. But that doesn’t mean anything to you as you are ALL about supporting Carney even if he was to sacrifice a baby in the middle of the street you would find a way to defend it. You are not what Canada needs right now. We need common sense and logic as well as less emotion and we need the deal papers released.

President Trump is firmly and confidently moving Forword for 51 state.. i hope he will Succeed soon.
He better bring lots of body bags. There will be no 51st state. You will lose a lot of people if he tries.
HOW IS TRUMP STILL ALIVE ???
The comments from anonymous about releasing the deal all sound like they were scripted by the Poilievre conservatives. Anything to undermine Canada will be undertaken by the Poilievre conservatives as long as they can play petty partisan politics. Outrageous.
@anonymous chinabot
An Angus Reid poll last thursday said 76% of Canadians didn’t want to take the bad deal that you were saying was an excellent deal.
ALL COMMENTS UNDER ANONYMOUS SHOULD BE AUTO DELETED.. If you don’t want your name attached then comments are worthless.
There’s a very loud contingent here that hate anything Carney/Liberal.
Disclosing details of a deal that may be in progress to keep them quiet is detrimental to all Canadians and Americans. Getting all stompy-foot, screaming and throwing a tantrum over whatever issues they can dream up is unhelpful.

While all of what you said may be true the reason most Canadians support walking away from the deal is because they are not thinking logically and are inly thinking emotionally by accepting what Carney says at face value and because they hate anything Trump. If Carney’s version of events is right then we should ALL support him, but if he isn’t being honest with Canadians, then we need to question him on it. The ONLY way Canadians can REALLY evaluate whether or not Carney was right to walk away from the deal is to be able to read and assess the deal itself in black and white and then thinking logically, not allowing emotion, we can understand why Carney walked away.
Disruptors from who knows where trying to agitate Canadians:
Cut all foreign aid immediately!
Show us the documents!
Meanwhile an Angus Reid poll this weekend said that 76% of Canadians think that breaking off negotiations was the right thing to do. If you ask 8 Canadians what the correct response to the US was 1, will say Canada should not have left negotiations, 1 will say they don’t know what we should have done and 6 will say walk away.
The only controversy over foreign aid or the contents of the deal is in here where anyone from anywhere in the world can stir things up.
An American negotiator told the NYT that the US offered Canada a 7% tariff on steel and aluminum and to remove the 10% tariff on lumber. If this true then why did Carney reject the deal and if not true why won’t Carney release the documents of the deal he walked away from. Something is not right here and Canadians need to see those deal documents. Let’s blow the American claim out of the water by releasing the actual documents for ALL to see.
Trump is an ass but that is not what is relevant at this juncture. What IS relevant is whether Carney’s version is true or not. So Carney should release ALL of the documents of the trade deal he walked away from so that Canadians can determine if what he said and did is actually valid. Canadians need to hold Carney up to scrutiny because his walking away from the deal is going to have a huge financial impact on Canadian families going forward. So we need to see if indeed he was right and if he was right to walk away then we should all support him BUT we Canadians need to see the actual details of the agreement first.
Why wait until September 8th to impose the retaliatory tariffs. Why not impose them immediately ? What is it that Carney is not telling Canadians and why won’t he show us the actual trade documents ? Is it that Carney is hiding something from Canadians ? Or is it that he has not been completely honest with us just as he wasn’t honest when he told us about the Gordie Howe bridge deal and then the actual details showed something completely different. Is that also the case with the trade deal and if not why won’t he release the documents of the deal so we Canadians can assess ourselves whether the deal was good or bad. Mr Carney release the deal to public scrutiny if you are confident in what you have said and done.
Being a 60 year old Canadian, Albertan who worked entire life in oil patch. All I have to say is to all the treasonous separatists. Please pack your bags and head for the US of Redneckville. but Alberta is treaty land and isn’t going anywhere. Canada strong forever
Hahaha, Donald DUMP can do what ever he wants. He’s just a brainless pocket picker stealing money from all of his allies.
Why wait to retaliate with Tariffs. Do same day as Pumpkin head does
If the LPC were serious about interprovincial trade, they’d drop the useless carbon, plastic, and packaging taxes they’ve inflicted on Canadian business’ and consumers.
Trump doesn’t no the meaning of bargaining in good faith
@ me he won’t be gone for 2 years and even then you don’t know who will be president next. Canada cannot afford to support companies and workers for 2 years or more.
Silly trump….thinks he can outsmart Canada…good luck.
Protecting Quebecs “culture and language” is not a priority to Albertans. Quebec still blocks pipeline from Western Canada to Atlantic Canada therefore Alberta should not assist Quebec in this regard.
The US negotiators asked for things that no sovereign country would give. Carney listed them in his press conference. It’s on his Youtube channel titled: LIVE: Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs • EN DIRECT : Notre réponse aux droits de douane américains. His discussion of the disqualifying points starts about 27:15 in.
trump, the most braindead dumbass president
Trump and his entire administration office needs to have their brains examined for mental incapacity. It’s about time to face this lunatic bully head on.
Trump is going to be around for a couple of years and Canada cannot afford to try and wait him out. Like it or not we need to do business with the US Carney needs to work something out so more companies don’t leave Canada. Also has anyone thought about even if the Democrats get in next election what will happen if they don’t stop the tariffs.
The orange turd will be out soon enough
Relax! He will be dead soon!
Why are Canadians celebrating like we won something. Carney ran and got elected on the assumption that he could deal with Trump. Canada is getting 50% in additional tariffs doesn’t seem like a win at all. Now Carney is going to match those tariffs. Now Canadians can dig deeper in their pockets to pay for things. Liberals will jack up taxes to subsidize all the people that will soon lose their jobs. Tell me what we won?
Carney the coward walked away from the negotiations last week as Leblanc and himself don’t have the skill sets to close a deal on behalf of Canada and make up a fake excuse of protecting Quebecs “culture and language”.
Ha ha ha the left wing nuts that think Canada is in control, “STOP SENDING STUFF TO THE US” must all be teachers or government employees. They have no clue.
Trump add more tarrifs to Ontario autos we will go 4 trillion in debt to bail out the elbozos in Ontario.
Canada is done. 51
Trump is the symptom. Liberal voters are the sickness.
Taco on the prowl
No need in trying to negotiate with an irrational bully, just stay the course. It’s be so refreshing when they have some adults running the place down south again.
Let’s just keep making deals with other countries. and turn our backs on the US until they get a real leader. We trust you at the helm Mr Carney!
Dollar for Dollar. More like Dollar for 70 cents.
It is like dealing with a spoiled 2 year old
Suresh Patel If your not on board protecting This great country of ours maybe you should fly back to your country of origin ..We don’t need people like you here .. Thx Have a nice day And be sure to enjoy all the benefits’ Canada affords you
the poor always get screwed. they lose jobs homes because of the lost deal now everyone has to pay more because we have to retaliate. carnage and tyhe rich wont be affected just us little people.i thought our argument against tarriffs was that the us people would pay the tarriffs and that wasnt right. but now our elustriuos betters are doing the exact same thing to us. i guess canaduh canrt complain about tarriffs anymore that we are paying them too. the little people always lose
This is a rant of a madman. Trump must be locked up in the asylum. We will never ever buy anything from the Americans. They already have a record debt of $40 trillion and their debt will go even higher. Some Canadians will lose their jobs but what is worse is that we are no longer allies with the Americans. Raise our energy prices (water, oil, and electricity)! The Americans are ripping us off with cheap energy!
The US and Trump can go blow smoke now , Do not send anything across that border, Cut off the power and all natural resources they need . Enough of that Clown . The Us will not recover from what he’s doing for years .
Smoke and mirrors. Trump and Carney are in cahoots to destabilize the west. They’ll make billions.
Trump is just cruising with his way of making enemies. His demented insanity and bullying will gain him nothing positive.
Heck yea! Elbows up!
Stop Trump! Stop Carney! Any reasonable American and any reasonable Canadian from off the street could sit together and work this whole thing out.
President Trump is firmly and confidently moving Forword for 51 state.. i hope he will Succeed soon
