Attempted murder charge for man who shot at Sask. Mounties

A man who allegedly shot at Mounties in Saskatchewan is facing 11 charges, including attempted murder. Mario Whitehead, 24, was charged following an assault investigation Saturday on the Red Earth First Nation.

Police were initially called to a residence on the reserve after receiving a report of an assault.

The investigation led to a second residence where Mounties say they encountered a man armed with a long-barreled weapon. Mounties said the man shot at a police vehicle and an officer returned fire.

He then fled on foot but was located and arrested a short time later. Whitehead was taken to a Saskatoon hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds where he is still recovering.

Along with the attempted murder charge, Whitehead is also facing the following charges:

  • discharge firearm with intent to endanger life;
  • point a firearm;
  • possession of weapon for the purpose of committing an offence:
  • careless use of a firearm;
  • assault with a weapon;
  • prohibited possession of firearm;
  • prohibited possession of ammunition;
  • assault; and
  • mischief under $5000.

Whitehead has appeared before a justice of the peace and will appear in provincial court once he has been released from hospital.

The RCMP have called in the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct an external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the results of which will be reported to the Ministry of Justice and attorney general.

Red Earth First Nation is approximately 245 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.
