Not since Marilyn sang “Happy Birthday” to JFK has the tried and true birthday song been so prominently featured in U.S. Presidential politics.
This time the roles were reversed, as a sitting U.S. President was the one to serenade a famous celebrity.
The impromptu birthday celebration took place last Wednesday during a visit to the White House on Usher’s – otherwise known as Usher Terry Raymond’s – 37th birthday.

Video posted to Usher’s Facebook page shows President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama talking with Usher at the White House, when White House staff surprise him with a cupcake containing a single lit candle.

At this point, Obama humorously offers up his birthday best, joined by his wife as well as the other gathered guests.
“And that’s a good cupcake too!” Obama joked after his song was finished.
The performance was actually a bit of turnabout for Obama after Usher had performed for the First Family that day as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
“I couldn’t be more grateful for this moment and all of the birthday wishes from everyone,” Usher wrote on his Facebook page.
