Volunteers hustling to get out the votes

PENTICTON — In the final hours before the polls close,  party volunteers are pushing to get out the votes. In the South Okanagan-West Kootenay riding, polls show it is a tight race, so volunteers are working even harder to make sure electors are able to cast their ballots.

“We offer rides, we knock on their doors, and we are phoning people we’ve identified (who support NDP) and are encouraging them to vote,” says Kenneth McLaren, the campaign manager for NDP candidate Richard Cannings.

“People may be very committed to their beliefs and who they’d like to vote for, but other things come into their lives, so we are phoning to remind them,” says Christine Elder, a volunteer at Liberal candidate Connie Denesiuk’s campaign office.

Volunteers for Conservative candidate Marshall Neufeld are also knocking on doors and phoning supporters.

But it isn’t just party volunteers who are offering rides to the polling station. Darren Sweet, the owner of Ogopogo Valley Tours, is shuttling people in Penticton and Summerland.

“Not being able to get to a polling station is a horrible reason not to vote,” says Sweet.
