Shots were fired at a police vehicle and Mounties returned fire during an assault investigation in northern Saskatchewan. Police were originally called to an alleged assault at a residence on the Red Earth First Nation around 9:45 p.m. CT. Saturday.
The investigation led officers to a second residence on the reserve 10 minutes later where they encountered a man outside the residence armed with a long-barreled weapon.
Police say the man fired at the police vehicle and an officer fired back. The man then fled on foot.

He was arrested without incident around 10:25 p.m.
The 24-year-old man was transported to a Saskatoon hospital for treatment of what are believed to be gunshot wounds.
No charges have been laid. Police say the victim and the suspect are known to each other.

The Saskatoon Police Service has been called in by the RCMP to conduct an external investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The results will be reported to the Ministry of Justice and attorney general.
The RCMP has also asked the Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer.
