Murray Rankin elected in Victoria

Murray Rankin has an early lead in Victoria.

Incumbent Murray Rankin has been elected in the riding of Victoria.

The NDP MP edged out Green Party candidate Jo-Ann Roberts by 3,338 votes, with just over 30 per cent of the polls reporting.

A riding that has elected NDP, Liberal, and Conservative candidates over the years, Victoria was seen as one of the Green Party’s best electoral hopes in 2015.

Liberal candidate Cheryl Thomas resigned after controversial comments on social media came to light. However, because it came a day after the registration deadline, her name remained on the ballot. Despite dropping out of the race, Thomas garnered more than 10 per cent of the vote.

In 2011, NDP MP Denise Savoie won her fourth term in Victoria, defeating Conservative candidate Patrick Hunt by 27.2 per cent.

Rankin won a 2012 byelection to replace Savoie, but Green candidate Donald Galloway was just 1,118 votes back.
