Adam Vaughan has been elected in the riding of Spadina-Fort York over NDP candidate Olivia Chow.
Chow was attempting to make her return to federal politics in the riding where she was MP from 2006 to 2014, after a failed run for Toronto mayor in the 2014 municipal election.
Vaughan beat NDP Joe Cressy by a margin of 19 per cent in a by-election following her resignation last year, and managed to hold on to the seat on Monday over Chow.
Chow won by 54.1 per cent in 2011, and if the boundaries of this riding existed in 2011 the NDP would have won by 49.6 per cent of the vote, followed by the Liberals with 24.4 per cent.
The new riding stretches from the area south of Dundas Street that was formerly a part of Trinity-Spadina.
The former riding of Trinity-Spadina has been a battlegorund between the NDP and Liberals since it’s creation in 1988, with the Liberals holding the seat from 1993 until 2006.
